Sleep While You Can, The Money You Chase After Will Still Be There In The Morning

June 12, 2023

They say that money can’t buy happiness. And while that is absolutely true, not having enough of it isn’t exactly a recipe for smiles. We are living in an unpredictable financial environment. The cost of absolutely everything has gone up due to inflation, supply chain issues, and a pandemic that decreased the workforce.

Society, even before all of that, placed great emphasis on chasing the all-mighty dollar bill. Going back centuries ago, the more affluent you were, the more highly you were regarded. That is still true to this day. So while money can’t buy happiness, it doesn’t mean that we should ignore it, either.

In modern society, you aren’t considered successful unless you are constantly busy. Consistently working long hours just to make ends meet. There is a lot of pressure to even just keep up with being able to afford the basic necessities we need in life, like groceries, gas, and paying bills. Many of us are now sacrificing our basic self-care habits for the chase – including sleep.

Sleep is one of the most basic, essential, and crucial components of our lives. When we sleep, it’s our body’s greatest chance to relax and heal. Not getting enough sleep is not only damaging to the healing process but to the functioning of our brains during the daytime, as well. Let’s go over the importance of sleep and why money isn’t worth sacrificing it.

Late Nights Don’t Mean Better Days

How often do you bring work you need to finish up? You get home and take care of your family and house. Then, you decide to stay awake and work. This can sometimes feel like a good idea. After all, getting more done at night, it makes the following day easier, right? Actually, not quite.

Staying up late to work and sacrificing your sleep is not really beneficial to you. Why? Because the less sleep you get at night, the less productive you are going to feel during the work day. When this happens, it sets you up for consistently bringing work home to catch up. Because your body didn’t have the natural energy it needs to function fully.

Money Is Important, But So Is Your Mental Health

Our bodies operate on a circadian rhythm. Our sleep schedules naturally want to follow that schedule. During the day, you are supposed to be awake and alert, with some slight variations, of course. At night when there is no light, the body wants to naturally settle down and sleep.

Late nights will break this cycle and throw your own rhythms completely off. When you frequently stay up late, your body eventually starts to see night time as the new “day time.” And during the day, it associates that time with sleeping.

When your body is thrown out of whack like this,  it affects your physical and mental health. Prolonged periods of sacrificing sleep for making money will likely cause anxiety and depression symptoms to start manifesting or become even worse.

How To Break This Cycle

It’s shameful that so much of our society and lives circle around the money we have or the lack thereof. Unfortunately, it’s just a part of life. That doesn’t mean that money needs to be everything in your life. Hustle to provide a good life for yourself and family, but remember that there are other things more important than money. It will always be there to chase after in the morning.
